GraFighters his CNN news!

04/20/2012

(http://whatsnext.blogs.cnn.com/2012/04/11/grafighters-a-game-that-brings-your-drawings-to-life/); graFighters: A game that brings your drawings to life by Nina Raja, CNN:

“When boredom struck Eric Cleckner (eric@grafighters.com) and David Chenell (dave@grafighters.com), they decided to get creative. They co-founded an online fighting game called graFighters (http://www.grafighters.com/), which lets users bring their own drawings to life.

Endless days of doodling during class led to the inspiration of game. Cleckner and Chenell envisioned a fighting game where they would take the characters they drew in class and plop them into a fighting game. “So we were two broke college kids," said Cleckner. One was a designer and the other a programmer. “We got as far as we possibly could, which was about 1% done with the game. Soon after, with the help of a venture capitalist friend from Europe, they were able to bring the game to life. The game is free to play and will be based on a freemium model, in which some premium services - new characters, an ad-free version - require a small payment.”

“A new version of graFighters may be launched which means new game mechanics, and a game that's easier to get into and just plain more fun. This also means a new fully functional iPhone app with Android following closely after,” writes co-founder, Dave Chenell in a recent blog post: http://www.grafighters.com/blog/ . “We will be doing more blog posts in the future with much more detail on our overall development, our migration to unity3D, game mechanics, and the mobile apps.”

The team at graFighters’ have been fundraising for a while and are looking to raise around $300K to build out the full version of the game for both web and mobile. They have raised a portion of this funding from angel investors so far, but they are seeking a lead investor. graFighters started their business in co-working space at The Tech Garden until moving into their own space in 2010; it is anticipated that once the funding is secure the team will soon graduate out of the facility.
